A Sunday on Le Grand Canal: Lemont Fall 2024 Postcard

Lemont may be the most Chicago suburb that has the most fun. With a moments notice, residents are ready to race to the quarry and post for a photograph that echos one of the most famous paintings of all time.

Each quarter we send a postcard to Lemont residents featuring events happening throughout the season. We’ve had a lot of fun over the years with featuring the work of late-local artist Joyce Affelt, a fun summer scene featuring local dog Chewie with a summer brew from the award-winning Pollyanna Brewing Company, and an illustration of the town by All Together designer, Gaby Pasman, that received such local adoration that we turned it into limited edition screen prints.

A Sunday on Le Grande Jette, George Seurrat 1884-1886
Currently on display at The Art Institute of Chicago

For our late summer/fall postcard, we thought recreating George Seurat's painting, A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, could be a great way to feature the I&M Canal, involve our local community and business owners, and give a fun nod to the upcoming Paris Olympics. Just like the Seine, the I&M Canal that runs through Lemont is instantly recognizable.

We had over 25 residents (including the pets) and Village staff make their way to the Canal on a warm, Tuesday evening. With the help of our photographer, Molly Hebda, we were able to recreate the 1884 piece for our August - October 2024 postcard.

View the final postcard here and look for it in your mailbox over the next few days.
