In the United States, roughly 35% of businesses are woman-owned. Today, In Lemont Downtown, nearly 85% of businesses are woman-owned. These businesses fuel our economic growth, provide jobs for locals, and help fuel a pipeline for entrepreneurship for all.

At Lemont Downtown, we hear from a lot of people: How do I get started?  Could I have a business in Lemont? Well, yes!

Throughout the month, we’ll be sitting down with some of your favorite women-owned businesses to learn more about their story, some insight on what it takes to start and run a successful business,  and hopefully inspire the next wave of entrepreneurs.

Last but not least, we’re sharing the story of Mary Beth Berent, owner of Martellen’s Bridal.

KG: How did you get into the wedding industry?

MB: I have always had a great love for the entire wedding journey. It is amazing to see each couple’s vision come to life and what a joy it is to see a couple commit their life to one another surrounded by friends and family. I was lucky enough to begin working with brides at Martellen's almost 10 years ago –.and the rest is history.

KG: Was taking over the business for your friend MaryEllen, an easy decision? Were you nervous?

MB: It was such an easy transition, MaryEllen had built such a wonderful reputation. Her reputation was so strong and I really just wanted to make her proud. It almost felt like she handed me over her baby to take good care of.

KG: What new direction have you taken with the business since taking it over 2 years ago?

MB: We truly wanted to keep the same customer-focused process. We are a family and we want our brides to feel that way through their bridal dress journey. We redecorated, added technology, and grew our social media. But I truly believe the most important aspect of our success will always be making brides feel valued and supported.

KG: What inspires you about the women and other customers you work with?

MB: I am lucky to be surrounded by such an amazing, eclectic group of women. Our staff encourages and promotse one another. We value each other's opinions and only want the best for each other and our brides. The same could be said for our beautiful brides and their family and friends.

KG: Between following trends, buying, hosting events, and assisting customers in store, how are you able to manage everything?

MB; Well that's easy I am so incredibly lucky to be supported by an amazing team. My family and friends are so proud of me it challenges me to do better and be better. However, my husband is the one who is my constant support. I am beyond blessed to have a partner who is my biggest supporter. Whenever I feel overwhelmed or discouraged he is the first one telling me "You've got this.”

KG: What obstacles have you overcome as a business owner?

MB: It’s finding the balance. As a small business owners, it can mean that you’re on your own and sometimes that work-life balance can become quite the juggling act.

KG: What advice would you give to someone interested in starting a business?

MB: Owning my own business is nothing I ever thought I would be doing at this stage of my life, but it is so rewarding. There is such pride in helping brides dream of finding the perfect gown for their big day. I love that I get to do this for work.
