Meet Your New Neighbors: Matt’s Barbecue Opens in Lemont Downtown
As soon as the weather finally breaks, we pull out the sunscreen, shorts, and make way for barbecue as we spend more time outdoors with family.
Fueled by a love for his family and a passion for making sure everyone has the perfect bite, Chef, Founder, and dare we say, Pit Master, Matt Borner is opening his first restaurant Matt’s Barbecue after growing a cult-like following for his delicious food. We sat down with him to learn more about his latest venture and to share with all of you!
Where did you get the idea for Matt's Barbecue?
I grew up grilling and smoking. I’ve been doing this since high school. After high school, I moved out to Central Texas where my passion just grew and grew. A few years ago, we decided to move back to Lemont to be closer to our extended family that had slowly moved here over the last decades. When I wasn’t working my full-time job or taking care of my kids, I was outside barbecuing. I bought larger grills and smokers and cooked for my family and friends and from there the word got out and I had orders from the entire community. I figured I was on to something and decided to give it a shot – officially!
What makes Matt’s Barbecue special?
We’re a quick-service barbecue restaurant that is family first and family-focused. I have 5 kids so I know how stressful it can be to make sure there is something for everyone. You’ll see this a lot on our menu. As a kid, I grew up getting a hot dog after every baseball game and I looked forward to it. On our menu, you’ll find ribs, brisket, smoked chicken, and all the fixings but you’ll also find Dippin Dots ice cream, hot dogs, and mac and cheese so you can enjoy your meals together and have a go-to spot after cheer meets, little league games, soccer practice, and swim meets. You can grab a beer or Mint Julep and relax knowing the entire family is fed.
What’s your previous restaurant or business experience?
None! I’ve been cooking out of my garage for years but this is my first crack at the restaurant business. I was a Union Heavy Equipment Operator for years and finally decided to quit and pursue my passion. Life is too short.
Why did you decide to open in Lemont Downtown?
Lemont has become our home over the years. I built my following here and it was only natural to create our family-focused restaurant in the place that my family calls home.
What's your favorite dish on the menu?
A Brisket Sandwich topped with coleslaw and a little bit of extra barbecue sauce. My wife’s potato salad recipe is on the menu and she makes it with dill, whole grain mustard, and all of the best ingredients. I’d pair it with an old-fashioned and banana pudding for dessert.
What are some of your favorite Lemont Downtown spots?
I love Wooden Paddle and Nick’s burgers, but every single shop is great!
What else should people know about your business?
The building that we’re in used to be an old bank – the Lemont Building and Loan Association. It comes complete with a gold ceiling, original brick, and vault. The original history is all over the walls but it was also the location of a robbery and there are pictures of the bandits getting away with $10,000. It has a lot of character!
That’s so cool! Matt, where can everyone find you?
